Driver Licensing Process in Arkansas and Effective Tools for Getting Prepared

Automobile License

In Arkansas, you are allowed to start the process to obtain a driver's license as soon as you turn 14 years. Provided that you complete the process successfully, you will get a restricted driver's license, allowing you to drive a car in the mandatory presence of a licensed driver who is over 21. It is possible to earn an unrestricted license as soon as you turn 18, providing all the necessary requirements are met.

The initial steps to obtaining your license in Arkansas are to review and learn the information in the Driver License Test Study Guide, to undergo a vision screening, and to take the AR knowledge test (although you do need to practice Arkansas DMV permit test prior to actual testing). After the tests are successfully passed, you will get an instruction permit, which is valid for 1 year. Having the permit, you can move on to a behind-the-wheel practice, which is necessary for proceeding to a road exam. After passing the exam, you will get your learner’s (for persons, who are between 14 and 16), intermediate (for persons between 16 and 18) or regular Class D license (for persons over 18 years of age).

In order to be admitted to the knowledge test, people under 18 must provide:

  • an original birth certificate;
  • a school form;
  • an application signed by a parent or legal guardian.

Applicants who are 18 or older have to submit 2-3 documents from the list of primary and secondary documents, proving their identity and legal presence in the U.S.

The testing is provided by the Arkansas state police and is available in computer-based or in oral form. Only 5 incorrect answers out of 25 questions are allowed. Retesting is possible 5 days after the first testing.

Motorcycle License

If you have already celebrated your 14th birthday, you have the right to apply for a Class MD license, which entitles you to operate motor-driven cycles. While this restricted license is only available to teens aged 14-16 years, persons who are 16 or older can earn unrestricted Class M license, allowing riding motorcycles of various types. In order to receive any of these licenses, you have to earn an instruction permit, which is possible only after passing a vision screening and 2 knowledge tests – a general exam and motorcycle knowledge exam.

The motorcycle knowledge exam is based on safe riding information outlined in the Motorcycle Operator Manual. Rules for passing the exam are the same as for the general test – 20 correct answers and 5 possible mistakes out of 25 DMV permit test questions. The list of documents for the application for both teens and adults is specified above.

Commercial Driver’s License

People who intend to operate a vehicle with a passenger seat configuration of 16 or more people, a single vehicle with GVWR exceeding 26,001 pounds or a combination vehicle with a GCV exceeding 26,001 pounds, as well as those who are going to transport hazardous materials have to obtain a CDL license of Class A, B or C. The license is available only for U.S. citizens or permanent residents over the age of 18. To start the process, they need to go through the CDL Study Guide and take a general knowledge test and some additional tests specific to a necessary class of license.

If you are searching for a driving test book or any other tool that can help you in passing the knowledge exams, use Driver Start services, which are specially designed to assist you in the learning and training process. Here you will find current versions of the official manuals and lists of test questions based on them. Any visitor can learn and practice right on the website without registration. At the same time, an easy-to-use app developed by Driver Start is available on the App Store and Google Play, to give you more freedom in learning and training.

Step-by-Step Guide on Driving Stick Shifts

While the sales of manual cars in the USA have been decreasing significantly since the 90s, stick shifts are still popular in European and Asian countries, especially in developing economies, which is often explained by the price. Undeniably, vehicles with manual transmission are usually cheaper than automatics, but this is hardly the only reason for choosing a manual car. Experts and auto enthusiasts hold that driving a manual vehicle allows the driver to gain a completely new experience that is appreciated by drivers. They highlight the fact that many powerful sports cars come with manual transmissions and this is done for a reason – you can better feel the car and the speed while gaining full control over the gears. For the same reason, driving a manual car can be safer in winter with its slippery roads, but this also depends on your driving skills.
