A Quick Guide to Getting Your Driver’s license in OH
Automobile License
If you want to drive a motor vehicle in the state of Ohio, you will have to get a driver’s license. All drivers younger than 18 must enroll in the Graduated Driver Licensing Program.
To get started with the Graduated Licensing Program in Ohio, you will have to qualify for a temporary instruction permit identification card. This involves:
- submitting your identification documents and a social security card;
- undergoing a driver knowledge course that typically consists of twenty-four hours of class education and eight hours of driving practice;
- practicing fifty hours of supervised driving (including ten hours of driving after dark) on top of the above course;
- passing a vision screening.
Lastly, you will be requested to complete an OH driver knowledge test. This will enable you to get a temporary instruction permit identification card (TIPIC). The test usually includes forty questions and you need a seventy-five percent score to pass.
Upon passing your exams successfully, you’ll be issued a TIPIC which will be available to you within sixty days. Your TIPIC is valid for six months. Remember that you must get your parents’ approval for your driving application as obtaining a TIPIC involves financial costs.
If you want to navigate a motorcycle in Ohio, you’ve got two options: to obtain a motorcycle license or earn a motorcycle endorsement on your existing driver’s license.
Motorcycle License
To qualify for a Motorcycle TIPIC, you must be 15 years and six months old. OH DMV’s official website emphasizes that a mandatory condition is passing a motorcycle knowledge test. Before that, you will have to submit your identity papers and undergo a vision screening.
Remember that your motorcycle TIPIC is valid for a year from the date it was issued. Upon its expiration, you will need to obtain it again and go through the above steps once more. As soon as you’re 18, you can apply for a full motorcycle license or endorsement.
Commercial Driver License
Ohio issues three types of commercial driver’s licenses: Class A, B, and C. To get a commercial learner’s permit you will need to satisfy the following conditions:
- be at least 18;
- self-certify your type of commercial driving;
- complete a knowledge test;
- pass a driving test (you will be obliged to bring in a vehicle for the test). The fee is $30;
- undergo a vision screening with an acuity of 20 / 40 per each eye (either with or without lenses).
Prior to your testing, you will undergo a pre-trip inspection fee which is $10. If you fail the test, you must wait one week to re-test.
A commercial learner’s permit is active for six months. You can renew it before expiration.
Once you have your CDL issued and if you wish to add an endorsement on it, you will have to pass appropriate knowledge and driving tests.
