How to Earn a Driver’s License in WI
If you wish to drive in Wisconsin, it is mandatory for you to obtain a driver’s license first. This state offers the Graduated Licensing Program to help new drivers start their driver’s training.
The Graduated Licensing Program encompasses three stages:
- Instructional permit. You are allowed to qualify once you are 15 years and six months old. Make sure to present identification docs and SSN and get your parent’s permission. Prior to applying, you must enroll a driver training course, which then enables you to complete traffic signs exam and WI written permit test. Also, you will be asked to undergo a vision screening and pay a $35 fee;
- Provisional driver’s license. You are allowed to apply when you reached 16 and held your learner’s permit for six months. Again, you will be obliged to provide your identification documents and SSN. You will also have to present a driving log with thirty hours of practiced driving including ten hours of driving after dark. After passing Wisconsin DMV driving road test and paying a $28 fee, you will be given a provisional license;
- Regular license. Consider applying once you turn 18 and have kept your provisional license for two years. You will be asked to undergo a vision screening and pay a $28 fee.
Drivers younger than 18 who wish to gain a motorcycle license in Wisconsin are obliged to get a learner’s permit first. The typical requirements are:
- reach 16 years of age;
- present a parent’s approval;
- submit a certificate confirming a driver training course completion;
- join the Motorcycle Safety Foundation program;
- pay a $32 fee.
Upon obtaining a learner’s permit which is active for six months, you can qualify for a Class M license. Pass a driving test and pay an appropriate fee to get your WI motorcycle license issued.
Commercial Driver’s License
There are two major requirements you need to meet prior to applying for a commercial driver’s license in Wisconsin:
- be 18 years old;
- hold a non-commercial driver’s license;
- present proofs of US citizenship and residency.
The first thing to do is to qualify for a commercial learner’s permit. You will need to:
- bring in proofs of US citizenship and residency;
- undergo a medical check;
- provide your driver’s license;
- pass a written exam;
- pay a $30 fee.
As soon as you have obtained your commercial learner’s permit, you need to wait 14 days to take your driving test. Before that, you will be asked to undergo a vehicle examination. Make sure to take your commercial learner’s permit to your driving exam.
Your commercial driver’s license is valid for eight years. Once it expires, you will have to go through this process again.

Did you find any useful practical tips about driving in adverse weather conditions in the Driver’s Manual you read before your driver knowledge test? Yes, there is something about safety when driving on a slippery road or during heavy rain and snow, but basically, the manuals give general recommendations about adjusting to specific driving conditions. So, it is hardly possible that you gain deep knowledge of driving on an icy road, while you practice the driver knowledge test. Behind-the-wheel experience is more useful, but it is rather dangerous to obtain it without being prepared in advance. On the other hand, you can practice the permit test and at the same time get prepared by reading helpful tips from experienced drivers. We collect the most common of them, starting from how to avoid dangerous situations and ending with how to act when you get on black ice.Read More
