How to Earn a Driver’s License in WI
Automobile License
If you wish to drive in Wisconsin, it is mandatory for you to obtain a driver’s license first. This state offers the Graduated Licensing Program to help new drivers start their driver’s training.
The Graduated Licensing Program encompasses three stages:
- Instructional permit. You are allowed to qualify once you are 15 years and six months old. Make sure to present identification docs and SSN and get your parent’s permission. Prior to applying, you must enroll a driver training course, which then enables you to complete traffic signs exam and WI written permit test. Also, you will be asked to undergo a vision screening and pay a $35 fee;
- Provisional driver’s license. You are allowed to apply when you reached 16 and held your learner’s permit for six months. Again, you will be obliged to provide your identification documents and SSN. You will also have to present a driving log with thirty hours of practiced driving including ten hours of driving after dark. After passing Wisconsin DMV driving road test and paying a $28 fee, you will be given a provisional license;
- Regular license. Consider applying once you turn 18 and have kept your provisional license for two years. You will be asked to undergo a vision screening and pay a $28 fee.
Motorcycle License
Drivers younger than 18 who wish to gain a motorcycle license in Wisconsin are obliged to get a learner’s permit first. The typical requirements are:
- reach 16 years of age;
- present a parent’s approval;
- submit a certificate confirming a driver training course completion;
- join the Motorcycle Safety Foundation program;
- pay a $32 fee.
Upon obtaining a learner’s permit which is active for six months, you can qualify for a Class M license. Pass a driving test and pay an appropriate fee to get your WI motorcycle license issued.
Commercial Driver’s License
There are two major requirements you need to meet prior to applying for a commercial driver’s license in Wisconsin:
- be 18 years old;
- hold a non-commercial driver’s license;
- present proofs of US citizenship and residency.
The first thing to do is to qualify for a commercial learner’s permit. You will need to:
- bring in proofs of US citizenship and residency;
- undergo a medical check;
- provide your driver’s license;
- pass a written exam;
- pay a $30 fee.
As soon as you have obtained your commercial learner’s permit, you need to wait 14 days to take your driving test. Before that, you will be asked to undergo a vehicle examination. Make sure to take your commercial learner’s permit to your driving exam.
Your commercial driver’s license is valid for eight years. Once it expires, you will have to go through this process again.
