Idaho DMV Requirements for DL Applicants
Automobile License
To put in for DL in Idaho, an applicant must be at least 15 and must get through all the stages of the state Graduated program. With this, minors under 17 are required to attend special training courses, approved by the state authorities (you can be enrolled when you turn 14 ½). The course comprises classroom instruction, in-car observation, and behind-the-wheel practice. Note that you need to earn a special permit to undergo driving practice within the training course. The driver training/supervised instruction permit allows operating a car when accompanied by an instructor appointed within the course. Upon completion of the driver training program, minors under 17 can drive on the state's roads under the supervision of a licensed driver who is 21 or older. Provided that the applicant meets all GDL program requirements, he/she will be admitted to testing for a Class D license, which implies both knowledge and road examinations.
If an applicant is 17 or older, it is not necessary to obtain a driver training/supervised instruction permit and to complete driver training programs, since the applicant is allowed to put in for a Class D instruction permit. Having this permit, the applicant can practice driving for 180 days when accompanied by a licensed driver of the age of 18 or older. To get the permit, an applicant must undergo an ID written permit test that consists of 40 questions based on the driver manual (available on Driver-Start.com). You can make no more than 6 mistakes to get through the testing, which can be taken in 11 languages, including American Sign Language. If the test is failed, it may be retaken in 3 days after you pay a test fee again ($3). A vision screening is also required before you are admitted to the written test.
A person, who wants to qualify for DL, the permits or a driving training program, needs to collect the documents listed below:
- documents showing date of birth, legal name and presence, SSN, residency;
- a certificate proving vision/medical screening;
- a document proving completion of a driving training program (for minors under 17);
- verification of school compliance (for minors under 18);
- parental consent (for minors under 18).
Motorcycle License
Any person having the intention of riding a motorcycle on ID roads needs to get a corresponding endorsement in his/her driving license. Thus, you have to hold Idaho DL of any class to obtain the necessary endorsement. Also, applicants under 21 years must complete a training course on riding motorcycles prior to submitting documents for the endorsement to DMV. While you need to undergo a general ID driver knowledge test when applying for DL, it is necessary to pass specific motorcycle examinations when applying for the endorsement. This includes both knowledge and road exams.
To acquire riding skills on the state roads, you may apply for a motorcycle instruction permit, which is valid for 180 days and allows riding observing certain restrictions. The permit can be issued after passing a motorcycle knowledge test.
Commercial Driver’s License
A current non-commercial Idaho DL and one year of driving experience are needed to earn CDL in the state. Also, you must be at least 18 and provide your DL, SSC, a document establishing Idaho residence and legal presence in U.S. (for non-citizens) to DMV office. All applicants for CDL must get through eye and knowledge examinations prior to skills testing.
