Taking Your Driving Test in ME
Automobile License
Any person wishing to operate motor vehicles on the territory of Maine is obliged to get a driver license. At the same time, it’s not needed if the person holds a learner’s permit and is accompanied by a licensed driver. Also, no ME driver license is required for military personnel with a military license operating a military vehicle.
If you wish to apply for a learner’s permit in Maine, you have to:
- be no less than 15 years old;
- successfully complete a driver knowledge test;
- pass the visual screening and written exam. For this, it is necessary to provide your birth certificate and a social security number at the ME DMV branch office.
In turn, to obtain a driver's license in Maine, you must be at least 16 years old and complete an approved driver training course. To apply for a ME driving road test, applicants under 21 years of age must hold a learner’s permit for half a year from the date it was issued. They also have to practice at least 70 hours of driving, including 10 hours of night driving.
To successfully pass your driving test in ME, you must be able to:
- complete a written permit test;
- undergo vision screening;
- get a positive review from your driving examiner confirming your ability to operate the vehicle, observe surroundings, and react to the other vehicles, pedestrians, and traffic signs.
Upon successful passing of the written exam and a Maine driver license permit test, you will be issued a Class C license. The first license issued to a person under 21 years of age is provisional for two years. In case of violating the traffic law during the time the provisional license is valid, it will be suspended for 30 days.
Motorcycle License
To obtain a motorcycle license in Maine, a person must be at least 16 years of age. For all applicants under 18, a prior motorcycle driver education course is mandatory. Upon passing a written exam and a driving test, the applicant is granted a learner’s permit valid for two years.
To operate a motorcycle vehicle, the license holder must also follow these requirements:
- Lights. The motorcycle headlights must be checked upon consistently to ensure they work properly in any driving condition;
- Helmets. Every person under 18 holding a learner’s permit is obliged to wear a helmet;
- Rearview mirror. It should provide the driver with a clear view of the road for at least 200 ft. distance.
Commercial Driver’s License
In ME, there are two types of commercial vehicles licenses: Class A and Class B. The Class A license allows the operating of a commercial vehicle with a gross vehicle weight more than 10,000 pounds. Class B CDL allows holders to drive commercial vehicles with a gross weight under 10,000 pounds. Holders of Class A license can operate any Class B and Class C vehicles provided all necessary endorsements are obtained.
