Gaining a Driver’s License in RI
Automobile License
If you wish to operate a motor vehicle Rhode Island, you must earn a driver’s license. It is mandatory for you to join in the three-level driver training system.
First, you’ll be asked to obtain an instruction permit. Be sure to:
- be 16 to 18 years old;
- bring in your identification document and social security number;
- undergo 33 hours of the training course certified by the Community College of Rhode Island;
- undergo an RI written permit test;
- provide your parent’s or guardian’s approval of your application.
Instruction permit stays active for 1 year or until the moment you reach 18, whichever event comes first.
Second, you must qualify for a provisional license. To succeed, make sure to hold your instruction permit for half a year and do not have any moving violations during this period. You will need to pass a driving road test. In addition, you will have to submit a driving log confirming that you have practiced fifty hours of driving, ten of which occurred at night.
Finally, you will have to earn a full driver’s license. To qualify, you must be at least 17 to 18 years old. You must hold a provisional license for a year prior to applying and not have any record of traffic rule violations. The licensing fee is $38.50.
If you’re 18 and never held a learner’s permit or license before, you will be requested to obtain an instruction permit for 18 and older.
Motorcycle License
To navigate a motorcycle, you have to gain a separate license. The primary condition before applying for it is to enroll in a motorcycle safety training from the Community College of Rhode Island.
You will have to present your existing driver’s license and a safety certificate when applying. The licensing fee is $26.50. You will then be issued a motorcycle permit which is active for eighteen months. However, you can wait a minimum thirty days and then qualify for a motorcycle license by submitting your motorcycle permit and current driver’s license.
If you presently hold a motorcycle license from the other state, submit it to the RI DMV and they will automatically transfer it.
Commercial Driver’s License
To lawfully navigate a commercial vehicle in RI, you will need a valid commercial driver’s license.
To qualify for a commercial learner’s permit, you are obliged to meet these requirements:
- be 21 years old;
- bring in identification documents including proofs of US citizenship, state residency, and social security number;
- undergo a medical check-up;
- submit your existing driver’s license;
- complete written and driving tests.
To further qualify for a commercial driver’s license, you need to have an operator’s license for two years and have no records of moving violations.
