How to Earn Your Driver’s License in NM
Automobile License
Drivers wishing to lawfully operate a motor vehicle on the roads of New Mexico must obtain a driver’s license issued by the state. Additionally, for all applicants under 18, successful completion of New Mexico Graduated Licensing System is mandatory.
A Graduated Licensing Program consists of three stages:
- Instructional permit: To qualify, you must reach 15 years of age. You’ll be requested to pass a vision screening, undergo a permit test, and practice fifty hours of driving under supervision including ten hours of driving at night. The permit fee is $10;
- Provisional license: To qualify, you need to reach the age of 15 years and six months and earn an instructional permit. You will also need to present a driving log proving you practiced fifty hours of driving. After passing an NM driving road test, bring in your application form signed by a parent. The provisional license is valid for one year. The fee is $18;
- Full license: First you need to have your application form signed by your parent. Next, submit a provisional license at a local DMV office. After paying a licensing fee, you’ll be issued an unrestricted driver’s license. Note that if you’re 18 years of age or older, you don’t need your parents or guardian to approve your application.
Motorcycle License
According to the NM DMV official website, the state issues a Class M motorcycle license with three types of endorsements on it: W, Y, and Z.
If you are younger than 18, you’re obliged to pass a Basic Rider Course with Motorcycle Safety Foundation. After that, you will have to undergo a written permit test.
Commercial Driver’s License
To earn a commercial driver’s license, you will have to obtain a commercial learner’s permit first. To succeed, you will have to pass written and driving tests, which will depend on the CDL class and endorsement you wish to obtain.
Remember to provide the following documents:
- proof of US citizenship (or a permanent residence permit);
- two proofs of New Mexico residency;
- a medical certificate.
As soon as you obtained a commercial learner’s permit, you may qualify for a full commercial driver’s license. Remember to bring the following documents to the DMV office:
- your current driver’s license;
- commercial learner’s permit;
- a social security card;
- proof of your identity and proof of US citizenship;
- a medical certificate;
- 2 proofs of New Mexico residency.
Although there are no official standards for commercial driving, you will have to prove your proficiency in driving commercial vehicles. Practicing your CDL test in advance is a good strategy to get your license on the first try.
