Delaware DMV Requirements and Useful Information about Testing
Automobile License
In Delaware, you may apply for a driver license from the age of 16, but till you turn 18 years, you can obtain only a Graduated driver’s license intended for minors. If you are under 18, you should complete a driver education course and get a certificate proving this fact, before you address DE DMV. Other documents required by the DMV include:
- an application;
- 2 documents establishing the full name and date of birth – one primary and one secondary document;
- 2 documents proving DE residency;
- a document proving legal presence (for non-U.S. citizens).
- SSN.
Before applying for Class D driver license, you must pay $40 fee. Also, a vision screening is necessary for being admitted to further testing. It implies a knowledge test, passing which you earn your learner’s permit and move on to behind-the-wheel practice under the supervision of an experienced driver. If you are under 18, you are issued Level one permit, allowing driving when accompanied by a supervisor, who is older than 25 and has at least 5-year driving experience. To convert the permit to a Class D license, you need to wait until your 17th birthday and to complete 12-month driving practice under supervision with no violations. If you are over 18, your supervisor has to be at least 21 years old, and you have to undergo a road examination within 6 months after getting the permit.
To apply for Class D license, you should study for permit test using information laid out in Delaware Driver’s Manual. The test covers 30 questions, and 24 of them must be answered correctly for getting through the exam.
Motorcycle License
There is no separate motorcycle license in DE, and you have to get a corresponding endorsement in your driver license to gain the privilege of operating a bike. Once you turn 18 and prove that you have already obtained a Class D license, you need to either complete a motorcycle education program or undergo written, eye, and road sign examinations. If you choose the latter, after earning your temporary permit you will be able to practice driving on the roads observing certain restrictions. Within 6 months, you need to undergo motorcycle skills testing to obtain a new driver license.
As for minors, they have to complete a motorcycle course in addition to driver education course. Upon completion of the course, they undergo knowledge and skills tests, after which a Student completion card is issued. Also, they need to submit a Class D license and permission from parents, as well as to pass a vision screening and to pay endorsement fee ($8 for a 5-year duration or $12 for an 8-year duration).
Commercial Driver’s License
There are 3 classes of CDL and 6 endorsements in Delaware. The license is available for persons over 18 (for intrastate transportation) or over 21 (for interstate transportation or for transporting hazardous materials). Also, applicants must have a valid NCDL and more than 1 year of driving experience.
To qualify for the license, a person must present an appropriate application, pay $5 fee and undergo the general DE pre-driving test and some additional tests depending on CMV type. If they are passed successfully, the person earns a learner’s permit, which is valid for six months. During this period the applicant is allowed to drive under the supervision of an experienced CDL driver with the same CMV qualification.
Since you won’t be able to get any of the above-mentioned permits without passing the general testing, Driver-Start.com has developed convenient learning and training tools. With their help, you can practice Delaware online learner’s permit test via your desktop or mobile device with our user-friendly and helpful application available on App Store and Google Play.
