Guide on How to Pass Permit Test in Alabama

Automobile License

In Alabama, once you turn 15, you are free to file an application for a learner’s permit, which is valid for 4 years and enables you to operate a vehicle under the supervision of a person over 21 or a driving instructor (both must be fully licensed). In order to earn the permit, you have to complete an AL Driver's Education course (for people under 16) and pass a written examination. If you get through the exam successfully, you will obtain the right to practice driving under your learner’s permit and in 6 months, you will have the chance to put in for a road exam followed by obtaining a provisional license. To get a regular Class D license, which allows for the operating of passenger cars and trucks, you have to wait until your 17th birthday.

Alabama’s written permit test is built upon the Driver Manual, which gives you information about traffic signs and signals, traffic laws and driving rules, Alabama’s point system and license suspensions, etc. Prior to the test, you need to learn the information, pay for the permit test and license fees ($41.25 in total), and pass a vision screening. The following documents must be submitted:

  • SSC;
  • an original or certified U.S. birth certificate (for minors) or 2 forms of identification, at least one that contains a photograph (for persons who are older than 18);
  • documents proving Driver's Education and school enrollment or school graduation (for persons younger than 19).

The test is available in both paper-based and computer-based forms, as well as in oral form for people who are unable to read. Also, it is possible to undergo the test in some foreign languages. Anyway, it is necessary to give at least 24 correct answers out of 30.

Motorcycle License

If you are older than 14, you can obtain a Class M learner’s license, allowing you to ride motorcycles after reaching the age of 16, you are enabled to get the same license, but with no restrictions, giving you the right to operate any motorcycle. Both licenses require passing a pre driving test in written form. It is based on the AL Motorcycle Manual, covering many issues like vehicle control, handling specific situations or carrying passengers/cargo. Passing the test is necessary to receive a learner’s permit, which allows the individual to move on to driving practice. You don’t need to take the exam provided you have completed a motorcycle safety course. In this case, it is necessary to submit verification in addition to the above-mentioned proofs.

Commercial Driver’s License

If you have already obtained your regular license, you are entitled to apply for a commercial learner's permit, which requires that you pass the knowledge test corresponding to a desired classification (A, B or C). In addition to the above-listed fees (totaled up $61.25), you need to provide:

  • a valid driver’s license;
  • SSN proof;
  • proof of legal presence (for non-citizens only);
  • corresponding medical forms.

The test is built upon the CDL Manual. On Driver-Start.com you will find effective tools aimed at helping you learn the manual and practice the CDL Class A, B and C tests to obtain the best results. Also, there are learning and training tools for getting ready to take AL Class D and M tests, available both for desktops and mobile devices App Store and Google Play. You can choose from a number of learning and training methods, as well as to use filters to focus on specific types of questions.

Top 12 Mistakes People Get Often On Driver's Exams

Have you ever thought about the reasons leading to failures on a driver’s license exam? Obviously, some people fail just because they don’t prepare thoroughly. According to statistics, the failure rate on the knowledge test varies from 20% in New Mexico and Iowa to about 60% in Arizona, Mississippi, and Missouri. Does this mean that 60% of Missouri new drivers don’t care about getting prepared for the test? That is very unlikely, and it seems like the rate depends on the test complexity among other things
