How to Get Your Driver’s License in NH

Automobile License

To be able to drive throughout the territory of New Hampshire, all drivers have to possess a valid driver’s license issued by this state’s DMV. Drivers younger than 18 are required to complete a certified Driver Education Program prior to qualifying for a license.

To apply for a driver’s license, be sure to:

  • fill out an appropriate application form;
  • bring in an identity paper which can be your birth certificate or US passport;
  • present the evidence of a New Hampshire residency.

You will then be required to pass a vision screening and an NH driver license permit test. Once you have passed these successfully, you’ll have to pass a driving test as well to prove your driving skills.

Upon successful completion of the above requirements, you’ll need to pay a licensing fee and take your picture. The DMV will then issue a temporary driver’s license and mail a permanent one to your NH residential address within sixty days. Applicants younger than 21 years of age are issued a Youth Operator license that expires as soon as the holder turns 21.

Motorcycle License

To qualify for a motorcycle license, you have to be no less than 16 years old. All applicants younger than 18 are required to complete a Basic Rider Class as well as present a completed parental permission form. An alternative to the Basic Rider Class is an NH DMV motorcycle skills test.

Once you passed the testing, you can qualify for a motorcycle endorsement. Make sure to provide these documents:

  • a valid driver’s license issued in New Hampshire;
  • a completed application for motorcycle endorsement form;
  • a certificate confirming you have completed a motorcycle skills test.

Remember that you’ll have to pay a $30.00 fee. Upon successfully meeting all requirements, you’ll be issued a motorcycle learner’s permit (if younger than 18 years of age). A permit is valid for 45 days, after that you can apply for a motorcycle driver’s license. The same documents as for the learner’s permit will be requested.

Commercial Driver’s License

Anyone holding a valid New Hampshire driver’s license may qualify for a commercial driver’s license. As of now, the state issues Class A, B, and C commercial licenses. To obtain any of them, you will need to do the following:

  • submit your current driver’s license;
  • complete an application form for obtaining a CDL;
  • pass a medical check and present a medical card;
  • pass a vision screening;
  • complete a CDL driver knowledge test;
  • pass a driving test according to the endorsement you wish to obtain.

The licensing fee for obtaining a commercial driver’s license is $60. Note that if you apply for a hazmat endorsement, you’ll need to get a fingerprint clearance from Transportation Safety Administration first.

Studying to earn a driver’s license is a responsible undertaking. Driver-Start.com made sure to collect a great selection of prep tests and inclusive online driver’s license information for you. We also offer our native mobile app available to you from App Store or Google Play  anytime. Take your learning with you and make your education more enjoyable.

Top 12 Mistakes People Get Often On Driver's Exams

Have you ever thought about the reasons leading to failures on a driver’s license exam? Obviously, some people fail just because they don’t prepare thoroughly. According to statistics, the failure rate on the knowledge test varies from 20% in New Mexico and Iowa to about 60% in Arizona, Mississippi, and Missouri. Does this mean that 60% of Missouri new drivers don’t care about getting prepared for the test? That is very unlikely, and it seems like the rate depends on the test complexity among other things
