A Quick Guide on Obtaining a Driver’s License in MS

Automobile License

All Mississippi residents aged 15 can qualify for a temporary driving permit. It’s the first stage in obtaining a driver’s license here. If you’re holding any driver’s licenses issued by another state, you must surrender them to the Department of Public Safety before qualifying for an MS driver’s license.

The temporary driver’s permit is active for one year. After that, you’re free to “graduate” to an Intermediate License. It’s the second stage in the application process. An Intermediate License is active for six months and you must be 16 ½ years old to qualify for a regular driver’s license.

If you’re less than 17 years of age, one of your parents must approve your application by providing you with a notarized form.

Once you obtain your learner’s permit, you’re able to qualify for a full driver’s license. To succeed, you’ll be requested to:

  • be 16 ½ years old;
  • possess a valid Intermediate License for a minimum of six months and present a clear record of driving;
  • if younger than 18, submit a document from a school or Department of Education that you’re currently attending;
  • successfully pass the driver knowledge test;
  • pass a medical check-up.

If you follow these requirements successfully, you’ll earn a Class R license. A Class R license lasts for one year and costs $6 annually.

Motorcycle License

If you wish to operate a motorcycle throughout the territory of Mississippi, you’ll have to earn a “motorcycle endorsement” on your Class D license. The major requirement is to complete an MS driving and written permit test.

Upon successful completion of your written test, you’ll obtain a learner’s permit (the fee for which is $1). You can then take your on-road driving test.

The Motorcycle Safety Foundation provides trainings throughout the state. To enhance your riding skills, consider enrolling in their program.

You’re going to need to present several documents to qualify for your motorcycle license or endorsement:

  • a birth certificate;
  • a social security card;
  • a document proving your Mississippi residency (e.g., an electric bill or mortgage documents).

Commercial Driver’s License

The state of Mississippi issues 3 types of commercial driver’s licenses: Class A, B, and C. There are also seven types of endorsements enabling you to operate commercial vehicles of different categories.

To earn your learner’s permit, you’ll be asked to undergo a vision screening and class-required written tests. In addition, you’ll have to pay a $13 fee. The CDL learner’s permit is active for six months, after that you can qualify for a full commercial driver’s license.

To apply, you must pass an MS commercial driver license permit test and earn an appropriate endorsement, which will depend on the vehicle category you’re going to drive. The fee per each endorsement is $5.

Driver-Start.com has great manuals, MS driving permit test questions and CDL practice tests available for you online anytime. We also have a mobile app that you can download from Google Play  or App Store . Make sure to check out the helpful guides we provide and nail your next driving test!

Top 12 Mistakes People Get Often On Driver's Exams

Have you ever thought about the reasons leading to failures on a driver’s license exam? Obviously, some people fail just because they don’t prepare thoroughly. According to statistics, the failure rate on the knowledge test varies from 20% in New Mexico and Iowa to about 60% in Arizona, Mississippi, and Missouri. Does this mean that 60% of Missouri new drivers don’t care about getting prepared for the test? That is very unlikely, and it seems like the rate depends on the test complexity among other things
