How to Apply for a Driver’s License in NE
Automobile License
To operate a motor vehicle on the public roadways in Nebraska, you’ll have to hold a valid driver’s license issued by this state. At the same time, non-residents are obliged to get a driver’s license within 30 days upon their arrival to the state.
NE offers several types of driver’s permits, and they all depend on how old you are:
- Farm husbandry permit is issued to everyone wishing to operate mini trucks and farm vehicles. You have to be a minimum 13 years of age to obtain this permit and undergo a vision screening, a road driving test, and driver knowledge test. Farm husbandry permit automatically expires when the holder turns 16;
- School learner’s permit is issued solely for training purposes and to enable you to qualify for your next permit levels. You have to be no less than 14 years old and undergo a vision screening and a written permit test. School learner’s permit is active for three months;
- School permit is issued to teenagers living far from their schools, if they reach the age of 14 years and 2 months. To obtain this permit, you’ll be requested to complete a certified driving safety course, or practice at least 50 hours of supervised driving;
- Learner’s permit is issued to applicants aged 15. You’ll need this permit to further qualify for a Provisional Operator’s Permit. You’ll be requested to undergo a vision screening and written tests. Learner’s permit is active for one year;
- Provisional Operator’s Permit (POP) can be obtained by everyone aged 16. It allows the driver to operate vehicles unsupervised between 12 midnight and 6 a.m.;
- Operator’s License is issued to applicants aged 17. It authorizes a driver to operate any motor vehicle, autocycle, moped, and an all-terrain vehicle (ATV).
Motorcycle License
If you’re younger than 18, you have to hold a Provisional Operator’s Permit (POP) for at least one year before qualifying for a Nebraska motorcycle license. The POP must have either a motorcycle endorsement on it or be a Class M one. You also need to pass a vision screening.
Commercial Driver’s License
NE DMV official website defines that all drivers wishing to get a commercial driver’s license must be no less than 18. A vision screening test is taken annually. You’ll also be requested to complete written and driving tests. Remember that you’ll also have to undergo a medical check-up.
All applicants are obliged to present a proof of the US Citizenship. Foreign citizens will have to submit a permanent residency permit or other documents confirming that their presence on the US territory is lawful.
