Earning a Driver’s License in Utah

Automobile License

If you plan to drive throughout Utah, you will need a driver’s license. Drivers under 21 are obliged to join the Graduated Licensing Program.

To get started, you will need to satisfy these requirements:

  • get a learner’s permit. To apply, you must reach 15 years of age. You will be asked to bring in your identification documents and SSN, undergo vision screening and a UT written permit test. A medical check-up is also required. The fee is $15;
  • practice 40 hours of driving, 10 of which must occur after dark;
  • hold your learner’s permit for six months before upgrading to a full license.

The next step is to qualify for an unrestricted license. You will have to:

  • be at least 16;
  • pass the traffic safety exam (the passing score is 100 percent);
  • present your learner’s permit;
  • pass a vision screening, Utah DMV driving road test, and provide a driving log with 40 hours (10 at night) signed by your parent;
  • pay $30 license fee.

Upon successfully meeting all of the requirements, you will be issued a temporary license, and the permanent one will be mailed to you in six weeks.

Motorcycle License

Like with the automobile license, you will first need to get a motorcycle learner’s permit.

To succeed, you have to meet these requirements:

  • fill out an appropriate application form in advance;
  • submit your identification documents and SSN;
  • undergo vision screening and UT written driver knowledge test;
  • pay a $9.50 fee.

The next requirement is to pass a driving test. Once you are ready, just book an appointment at your local DMV branch. If you pass the driving test successfully, your brand new motorcycle driver’s license will arrive within four weeks.

UT DMV strongly recommends that you complete a Basic Rider Course from the Motorcycle Safety Foundation. This is probably one of the best ways to get a quality driver training.

Commercial Driver’s License

To apply for a commercial driver’s license in Utah, you have to be a minimum 18 years old. Another important precondition is holding a driver’s license for at least a year and gaining the appropriate driving practice.

Before qualifying for a commercial driver’s license, you will need a commercial learner’s permit. The procedure is as follows:

  • bring in proofs of US citizenship, residency, and SSN;
  • undergo a medical check-up and a vision screening;
  • pass a driving record check;
  • pass a written exam;
  • pay a $40 permit fee.

Obtained your commercial learner’s permit? The next step is to apply for a CDL. You will need to:

  • submit your commercial learner’s permit;
  • pass a medical check, if asked;
  • successfully pass a driving test;
  • pay a $60 licensing fee.
