Earning a Driver’s License in ND

Automobile License

Like any other US state, North Dakota requires that any individual wishing to drive on its public roadways holds a valid driver’s license.

To qualify, you must be at least 16 years of age. You are allowed, however, to get a restricted driver’s license at 15. For any driver younger than 18 a parent or a guardian must approve a driving application.

During the application process, you will be required to present the following documents:

  • identification documents like a birth certificate, US passport or a permanent residence permit;
  • your SSN;
  • evidence of your North Dakota residency.

To qualify for a learner’s permit, you will need to:

  • submit your identification documents and SSN;
  • undergo a vision screening;
  • pass an ND written permit test;
  • provide a parent’s or guardian’s approval for covering financial liabilities;
  • if aged 14 - 15: to get a license, you need to hold a learner’s permit for a year, practice fifty hours of driving and pass a driving road test;
  • if aged 16 - 17: to obtain a license, you must hold a learner’s permit for six months and complete a driving test.

All drivers holding a learner’s permit are only allowed to drive under supervision.

Motorcycle License

In order to apply for a motorcycle license, you must be a minimum of 15 years of age. You will be required to:

  • present identification documents and SSN;
  • already hold a learner’s permit or a driver’s license or have an ND driver knowledge test successfully passed;
  • undergo a motorcycle knowledge test (additionally, drivers under 16 are required to complete a Basic Rider Course before applying);
  • pass a vision screening;
  • undergo a driving test the fee for taking which is $5;
  • pay an $8 fee (however, if this is your first motorcycle permit, the fee is $15).

Commercial Driver’s License

North Dakota currently issues three types of CDLs: Class A, B, and C. If you intend to get a commercial driver’s license, you need to be 18. If you need a CDL for harvesting driving only, you’re entitled to qualify for it at 16. At the same time, in order to operate a commercial vehicle interstate, you need to be 21.

You will need to satisfy the following requirements to obtain your commercial learner’s permit:

  • undergo a CDL knowledge test. The fee is $5;
  • submit your existing North Dakota driver’s license;
  • present identification documents and a proof of U.S. residency;
  • pass a vision screening;
  • pass a driving test (remember that you are required to hold your commercial learner’s permit for fourteen days before taking the test). The fee is $5 and $3 per endorsement;
  • pay a $15 permit fee.

Step-by-Step Guide on Driving Stick Shifts

While the sales of manual cars in the USA have been decreasing significantly since the 90s, stick shifts are still popular in European and Asian countries, especially in developing economies, which is often explained by the price. Undeniably, vehicles with manual transmission are usually cheaper than automatics, but this is hardly the only reason for choosing a manual car. Experts and auto enthusiasts hold that driving a manual vehicle allows the driver to gain a completely new experience that is appreciated by drivers. They highlight the fact that many powerful sports cars come with manual transmissions and this is done for a reason – you can better feel the car and the speed while gaining full control over the gears. For the same reason, driving a manual car can be safer in winter with its slippery roads, but this also depends on your driving skills.
