How to Get a Driver’s License in NV

Automobile License

Drivers wishing to operate vehicles in the territory of Nevada must obtain a driver’s license. The minimum age for qualifying for a license is 15. Applicants under 18 years of age are required to complete a driver’s education program either in a public or private driving school. Remember that this course is not required for a driver’s permit but for a license.

First, applicants under 18 need to obtain a learner's permit. To succeed, they must meet the following requirements:

  • be a minimum of 15 years and 6 months of age;
  • present a Certificate of Attendance form to their local DMV;
  • bring identity paper, SSN, and proof of NV residential address;
  • get one of their parents or a legal guardian to co-sign financial documents;
  • pass the vision screening and a driver license permit test.

Upon obtaining a learner’s permit, it is possible for you to qualify for a driver’s license. You will need to:

  • be at least 16 years old;
  • hold a learner’s permit for no less than half a year;
  • have a clear driving record as well as no alcohol or drug-related convictions for six months prior to applying;
  • practice 50 hours of driving, including 10 hours of night driving;
  • maintain an official DMV driving training log.

Motorcycle License

To operate a motorcycle in Nevada, you don’t need to earn an endorsement on your driver’s license but to obtain a Class M motorcycle license itself.

In order to apply, you have to pass a certified training course. You have two options here: use a course from NV DMV official website or complete a Motorcycle Safety Foundation course. You are not required to obtain an instruction permit prior to applying for a course. Remember that you will have to pay $26 for taking your test above the regular licensing fee.

Applicants under 18 must bring in one of their parents to co-sign the financial agreement.

Commercial Driver’s License

To obtain a commercial driver’s license in Nevada, you have to be a minimum 18 years of age. Additionally, to be able to operate different categories of commercial vehicles, you’ll need to get an appropriate endorsement on your license.

To qualify for a commercial driver’s license, make sure to submit the following documents:

  • proof of identity, SSN, and proof of Nevada residency;
  • a list of all driver’s licenses issued by the other states as DMV will then check your driving history for any moving violations;
  • present a Medical Examiner’s Certificate.

If all requirements are met successfully, you will be granted a commercial learner’s permit.

Not sure how to pass all the tests? Driver-Start.com has plenty of online driver’s license study guides and prep tests. You can take the tests online at your own pace. All questions are taken from official DMV manuals. We also have a mobile app which you can download from App Store  or Google Play . Now all training materials are available to you with a single tap.

Step-by-Step Guide on Driving Stick Shifts

While the sales of manual cars in the USA have been decreasing significantly since the 90s, stick shifts are still popular in European and Asian countries, especially in developing economies, which is often explained by the price. Undeniably, vehicles with manual transmission are usually cheaper than automatics, but this is hardly the only reason for choosing a manual car. Experts and auto enthusiasts hold that driving a manual vehicle allows the driver to gain a completely new experience that is appreciated by drivers. They highlight the fact that many powerful sports cars come with manual transmissions and this is done for a reason – you can better feel the car and the speed while gaining full control over the gears. For the same reason, driving a manual car can be safer in winter with its slippery roads, but this also depends on your driving skills.
