Applying for an MT Driver’s License

Automobile License

All individuals wishing to drive throughout the territory of Montana are required to hold a valid driver’s license. Everyone aged 15 can apply for a driver’s license in this state. Drivers under 18 years of age are obliged to study for their permit test under the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program.

GDL in MT encompasses three stages. The first is obtaining an instruction permit. Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • practice at least 60 hours of supervised driving, including 10 hours of night driving;
  • complete a knowledge test;
  • pass a medical check-up.

The second stage of the GDL system is qualifying for a first-year restricted license which is active for one year. After paying the fees and passing a driving road test, the applicant can operate vehicles on public roadways in MT. However, the new drivers are required not to drive at night and are restricted to the number of passengers allowed in their car.

Once the first-year license terminates or the driver turns 18, it is automatically upgraded to a full-privilege driver’s license. A Class D license is valid for four to eight years and usually expires on your birthday. Remember that you will be requested to pay $5 fee annually until your license expires. You must also present a vehicle liability insurance for the vehicle you wish to operate.

Motorcycle License

Applicants wishing to qualify for a Montana motorcycle license need to do the following:

  • be a minimum of 16 years of age;
  • provide proof of Montana residency;
  • pass a written permit test and driving skills test;
  • bring a registered and functional motorcycle for a driving test;
  • pay a $0.50 fee on top of the regular licensing fee.

Upon successfully meeting the above requirements, you are issued a learner license valid for one year. To apply for a full license, you’ll need to pass a very extensive test which consists of 5 parts (Driver Start provides comprehensive training guides to help you practice a DMV permit test):

  1. medical check-up;
  2. review of the applicant’s driving record;
  3. vision screening;
  4. a knowledge test;
  5. a driving test.

Commercial Driver’s License

Montana issues Intrastate Commercial Driver License valid throughout the territory of the state. All commercial vehicles are classified into three groups: Class A, B, and C (Class D is a non-commercial vehicle category).

To operate any commercial vehicle, the driver will have to earn a particular endorsement on his / her driver’s license. This process typically involves:

  • being at least 18 years old;
  • deciding upon your status: excepted or non-excepted which depends on whether you’re operating intrastate or interstate;
  • passing the vision screening;
  • completing MT driver knowledge test;
  • passing a driving exam.

Montana has very extensive requirements for the motorist, motorcycle, and CDL testing. Taking your time to go through the study guides is the best strategy to obtain your driver’s license. Driver-Start.com offers a wealth of online driver’s license tests to get your training needs covered. You can also download our mobile app from Google Play  or App Store  and study on the go.

Step-by-Step Guide on Driving Stick Shifts

While the sales of manual cars in the USA have been decreasing significantly since the 90s, stick shifts are still popular in European and Asian countries, especially in developing economies, which is often explained by the price. Undeniably, vehicles with manual transmission are usually cheaper than automatics, but this is hardly the only reason for choosing a manual car. Experts and auto enthusiasts hold that driving a manual vehicle allows the driver to gain a completely new experience that is appreciated by drivers. They highlight the fact that many powerful sports cars come with manual transmissions and this is done for a reason – you can better feel the car and the speed while gaining full control over the gears. For the same reason, driving a manual car can be safer in winter with its slippery roads, but this also depends on your driving skills.
