Peculiarities of Earning DL in Kentucky

Automobile License

In Kentucky, a person must be at least 16 to qualify for a driver license as well as for a learner’s permit. In the permit phase, an applicant is required to present certain documents and to undergo 2 examinations: an eye screening and a KY driver license permit test. The permit test is taken in written form (in certain cases the test questions may be asked orally), while a choice of 20 foreign languages is available in addition to English. The questions are built upon the state Manual covering safe driving techniques, road signs, and driving rules. Eight percent of the test questions must be answered correctly to pass the knowledge test and to earn the permit. If the exam is failed, they are allowed to retake it the next business day, but if you fail 6 attempts, you must wait 6 months before trying again.

Prior to taking the testing, a first-time applicant must collect documents establishing SSN, identity (a birth certificate) and KY residence. A person under 18 must present an application signed by his/her parents and a school compliance verification form.

Upon passing the tests, the applicants receive their permit and can start their driving practice provided that they are accompanied by a supervisor in accordance with rules. Persons under 21 must hold their permit for a minimum of 6 months before they are eligible to apply for DL and to undergo a skills examination. Persons over 21 must wait for a month before they are admitted to the driving examination.

Upon completion of the required period of holding the permit, you must prove your driving skills by passing the road examination. If it is passed, persons under 18 receive an intermediate license that implies certain restrictions. To obtain an unrestricted license, minors under the age of 18 are required to hold the intermediate license for at least 6 months and to complete a New Driver Education Program, approved by the state.

Motorcycle License

Applicants under the age of 18 are eligible to obtain a motorcycle learner’s permit/license only in case they have already received a regular DL. Also, minors have to provide a corresponding application signed by their parents/guardians. If a person is over 18, he/she is allowed to apply for the permit without holding the license.

To receive the permit, it is necessary to undergo a vision screening and a knowledge test. The test comprises questions based on both the driver manual and motorcycle. The next step is to practice riding for at least one month and then to pass a road test. Alternatively, holding the permit, you may complete the state Motorcycle safety education course – in this case, you don’t need to undergo the road exam.

A moped license is available for persons who are over 16 and required only in cases where an applicant doesn’t have any other Kentucky license or permit. If so, the applicant must submit a driver license form and pass an eye examination and a general KY driver knowledge test. Neither obtaining a learner’s permit nor passing a moped skills test is required.

Commercial Driver’s License

Kentucky requirements for CDL applicants don’t differ much from those in other states. You must start by obtaining an instruction permit through passing vision and knowledge examinations. The permit is valid for 6 months, but you may try to pass a road test in 14 days. The road test is available by appointment, while the knowledge test doesn’t require it.

Step-by-Step Guide on Driving Stick Shifts

While the sales of manual cars in the USA have been decreasing significantly since the 90s, stick shifts are still popular in European and Asian countries, especially in developing economies, which is often explained by the price. Undeniably, vehicles with manual transmission are usually cheaper than automatics, but this is hardly the only reason for choosing a manual car. Experts and auto enthusiasts hold that driving a manual vehicle allows the driver to gain a completely new experience that is appreciated by drivers. They highlight the fact that many powerful sports cars come with manual transmissions and this is done for a reason – you can better feel the car and the speed while gaining full control over the gears. For the same reason, driving a manual car can be safer in winter with its slippery roads, but this also depends on your driving skills.
