Illinois Testing Requirements for Obtaining a Driver license

Automobile License

Like many other U.S. states, Illinois offers its Graduated Driver License Program aimed at promoting safer driving on state roads. Persons, who are older than 15, may be enrolled in the program provided they attend a driver education course approved by the state authorities. Also, they must study for a permit test and pas it successfully along with a vision screening. If all the required conditions are satisfied and parental consent is provided, an instruction permit is issued, allowing driving practice with certain restrictions and under the supervision of an adult, who is over 21 and holds a valid DL. The permit is valid for 2 years and must be held for a minimum of 9 months before moving onto the next stage of the Graduated program.

Minors aged 16-17 years have to complete their driver education and to get confirmation that they have sufficient hours of driving practice from their parents. Their written consent on obtaining a driver license by the minor is also mandatory. If the person meets all the requirements, he/she obtains a license and gains the right to drive without supervision, but with certain restrictions.

Persons, who are between 18 and 20, have to complete an adult driver education course, approved by the state. Upon the completion, they are allowed to get a full license.

Adults over 21 are required to submit their identifying documents, to pay the fees, and to get through 3 examinations—the vision, knowledge, and road tests.

The general list of documents that must be provided when applying for Illinois DL includes:

  • a document showing signature;
  • proof of SSN;
  • a document establishing date of birth;
  • 2 documents proving residency.

Motorcycle License

Illinois offers 2 types of licenses, which allow operating bikes: Class M is for motorcycles and Class L is for motor-driven cycles. To earn any of them, a person, who holds IL DL, must take motorcycle knowledge and driving examinations. Those people who haven’t received a DL in IL yet have to pass 2 written tests: a general driver knowledge test and motorcycle knowledge exam. Besides, an eye examination and a road test are mandatory. The road and knowledge tests are not required, if the person is over 18 and holds a Student Completion Card, proving completion of the state Motorcycle rider course. Still, minors under 18 must take the exam even having the card.

Commercial Driver’s License

Prior to getting CDL, applicants have to earn a commercial driver permit, which gives the right to legally practice driving commercial vehicles under supervision. You are not allowed to apply for CLP if you are younger than 18 and/or you don’t have any non-commercial DL. The permit will be issued after you present the necessary documents and undergo knowledge tests required for the type of vehicle you are going to operate. If the knowledge test is successfully passed and the permit is issued, you can move on to IL CDL practice test that can be taken at least 14 days after you obtain the permit.

When you are trying to get ready for your knowledge testing, don’t hesitate to use Driver Start helpful learning methods. You are free to choose the most comfortable way or use both of them to proceed with your learning. Then you should train passing the tests using our effective tools available online for desktops without registration. Also, there is an application developed by Driver Start for mobile devices, which is available on Google Play and App Store. It features the same choice of options for learning and training the above-mentioned knowledge tests based on the current Illinois manuals and rules of the road.

Step-by-Step Guide on Driving Stick Shifts

While the sales of manual cars in the USA have been decreasing significantly since the 90s, stick shifts are still popular in European and Asian countries, especially in developing economies, which is often explained by the price. Undeniably, vehicles with manual transmission are usually cheaper than automatics, but this is hardly the only reason for choosing a manual car. Experts and auto enthusiasts hold that driving a manual vehicle allows the driver to gain a completely new experience that is appreciated by drivers. They highlight the fact that many powerful sports cars come with manual transmissions and this is done for a reason – you can better feel the car and the speed while gaining full control over the gears. For the same reason, driving a manual car can be safer in winter with its slippery roads, but this also depends on your driving skills.
