Helpful Driver’s License Services in Alaska
Automobile License
Prior to passing a driving test and getting a driver’s license, AK residents have to take a written knowledge test, allowing them to obtain a permit for learning to drive on Alaska roads. Non-residents, who are over 16 and have the license received in other state or country, have to apply for AK driver’s license within 90 days of moving to the state.
People older than 14 years are eligible to apply for the permit, which is valid for 2 years and allows them to drive under the supervision of a licensed driver who is over 21. The Alaska driver knowledge test is also necessary for receiving a provisional license by people aged 16-18, who can apply for it after 6 months of driving practice under the learner’s permit. People with revoked or expired driver’s licenses have to take the knowledge test, too.
To succeed in passing the knowledge test, you need to acquire or download the Driver’s Manuals issued by Alaska DMV. The manual covers information about traffic signals and signs, road rules and self-driving practices, and provides some samples of test questions. During the test, you need to answer at least 16 questions out of 20 questions correctly.
Alongside the knowledge test, vision and alcohol awareness tests (for people over 21) are required for obtaining a Class D license, which allows for driving passenger vehicles. General requirements for all types of driver’s licenses include:
- paying a $15 fee;
- submitting a corresponding application form;
- presenting a consent form signed by parents (for people under 18);
- proving documents verifying legal name, date of birth, residence, SSN, and name change (if any).
Motorcycle License
Starting from 14 years, you can apply for M2 license, which allows for the operating of a motor scooter or motorized bicycle. You need to be at least 16 to obtain an M1 or M3 license. These licenses allow you to drive any motorcycles, including 3-wheeled bikes. When applying for M2, you have to pass the general knowledge and motorcycle knowledge tests in written form. When earning M1 or M3, you only need to the pass the test provided you received the instructional permit (IM type) issued at least 6 months beforehand.
Before taking your motorcycle knowledge test, you have to read and learn the Motorcycle Operator Manual issued by DMV in Alaska. It covers specific topics, such as control for safety, trouble prevention, as well as carrying passengers and cargo. When passing the test, you are allowed to make 5 mistakes out of 25 questions.
Commercial Driver’s License
To earn the CDL (Class A, B, or C), it is necessary to obtain a commercial learner’s permit. It is available for people over the age of 18. You must have a valid driver’s license issued at least a year prior to submitting the application. Along with the general knowledge test, applicants have to undergo a vision test and some additional tests for specific types of vehicles. The CDL Manual provides detailed information about the types of licenses, restrictions and endorsements, as well as specific rules related to driving school busses, tanks, combination vehicles, etc.
To be allowed to take the test, you have to provide:
- medical examiner's certificate;
- commercial driver medical & self-certifying verification form.
Since the official manuals don’t provide applicants with a complete list of test questions, Driver Start online service offers helpful tools, including practice tests for the Commercial Driver’s License, as well as the tests for Class D and motorcycle licenses. The service includes both learning and training sections, which are also available for mobile devices. Downloading the Driver Start app, you will be able to learn and practice valid test questions anytime you want.

While the sales of manual cars in the USA have been decreasing significantly since the 90s, stick shifts are still popular in European and Asian countries, especially in developing economies, which is often explained by the price. Undeniably, vehicles with manual transmission are usually cheaper than automatics, but this is hardly the only reason for choosing a manual car. Experts and auto enthusiasts hold that driving a manual vehicle allows the driver to gain a completely new experience that is appreciated by drivers. They highlight the fact that many powerful sports cars come with manual transmissions and this is done for a reason – you can better feel the car and the speed while gaining full control over the gears. For the same reason, driving a manual car can be safer in winter with its slippery roads, but this also depends on your driving skills.
